Internship Description: The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Rights Division of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is currently seeking an intern in the Nairobi office. The internship will focus on human rights abuses affecting LGBT people in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, although the intern may occasionally assist with research related to other countries in Africa. The internship will generally involve the following projects and tasks: · Monitoring and Research: The intern will assist the LGBT Rights researchers with desk-based research on human rights abuses affecting LGBT people in the region. S/he may also assist researchers with interviews with victims, civil society organizations and other stakeholders. Additionally, the intern will follow the regional media to monitor references to LGBT issues in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The internship may also include translation of documents (i.e. LGBT issues in news articles) and interpreting oral interviews in Kiswahili/English. · Communications: The intern may maintain contact with other civil society organizations focusing on LGBT rights in East Africa, in order to ensure information sharing. The intern may be requested to attend meetings with these organizations. · Administration: The intern will assist with some administrative tasks including setting up meetings, file and database management, and drafting correspondence. Internships are unpaid. Interns may be provided with a stipend for lunch and local travel costs as pre-approved by HRW and in accordance with HRW policy. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements. Qualifications: This internship is open to graduates in law, international relations, women’s/gender studies, communications, or related subjects with strong writing and research skills. However, applicants with field experience, either in human rights, humanitarian work or journalism, in the region are also advised to apply.Applicants should be self-motivated and reliable, with a strong interest in the human rights situation facing LGBT people in East Africa. Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are required. Excellent oral and written command of English, and oral command of Kiswahili, is necessary. The intern will be based in the Nairobi office and should be available to commit to this internship placement for a period of at least three months. Hours and schedules are negotiable, but ideally the intern will be available to work at least fifteen hours a week. Start and end dates are flexible.
